my dh & i have been discussing the topic ever since tuition went up (20%-yikes)...it's not that we can't afford it (my ego was crushed when the tuition assistance program was suggested to me)...my concern lies in the value for our $$$...we have homeschooled our dd for kindergarden and as you may well think, that was easy, there was also a lot of transition in our lives at the time (not the least of which i was still drinking)...anyway, we put her in public school for 2 years and she has been in a private Christian school now for 2 years, and altho she has certainly grown, overall it seems she has regressed: her handwriting is poor and somewhat illegible, her spelling leaves a lot to be desired, math concepts are not being retained (much less comprehended for longer than a day) and conduct is worsening...her faith on the other hand has flourished beyond belief! i am so trully grateful for that, and hope that in our homeschool environment my dh & i can continue to encourage her relationship with Christ...she is anxious to get Baptized this summer before she turns 10!! yeah!
anyway, here are the pros & cons, let me know what you think...
pros:
- Education - learning to learn, accountability, Comprehension & Retention, Little or No Distractions
- Financial Savings - we will save 60% of what we would normally spend (by using the A Beka Curriculum), No Uniforms (more savings), No Fundraisers (more savings), Gas to & from school (more savings)
- Family Growth - Spiritually, Forced Scheduling & Consistency, Future Lifetime Benefits
- A Beka Curriculum - Accredited for Graduation, DVD Courses, Testing & Daily Instruction
- One Year Trial - if this doesn't work out for any reason, we can always send her back to private school
cons:
- Daily Contact with peers, learning sharing & competition
- Our lack of consistency
...as you can clearly see the pros outweigh the cons, but i am not a very consistent person and that is a biggie! as far as dd's social life, if you know her at all, you will soon realize that that is the very least of my concerns! she is probably the most adaptable person i've ever know, quite a charmer as well!

Structure and consistency are key, but i am not saying yay or nay about home-schooling. I my-self lack structure and consistency. What does she want to do, not that it should matter just curious. Good Luck. :)
